Yeah ... sad ... here's a relative anecdote that happened to me yesterday ... we were having "visitation" day for prospective History of Science & Medicine Ph.D. students. One of the students, a physicist undergrad at M.I.T. told me that he was interested in Mars and in response I asked him, "So, are you interested in the history of Mars in culture (as in its symbolism in war & popular culture) ... a girl standing nearby, another one of the prospectives, said, "Of course not, there's no Martian culture because there aren't any people on Mars." She did her undergrad at Stanford, btw.

Wait, isn't that the idea behind half of Ray Bradbury's short stories? And novels? And that anime E.Y.E.S. of Mars? Seems hardly original to me. ;p

Would you believe I haven't read any Bradbury?
If I ever do decide that I should write a science fiction novel, I damn well better have read up first. I'm sorely behind when it comes to my scifi "research".

Bradbury is.... well... Bradbury. A lot of his stories end up bleak. I'm pretty sure he was tripping on something when he wrote most of it.
