I actually lived in Okinawa for two years when I was in the military. I agree, this did seem weird, but I'm glad everyone made it off the plane safely...which, if you look at pictures of the plane, seems rather miraculous.
I just saw video of the explosion on our noon newscast. That was totally crazy! It is a miracle no one was hurt.
Apparently the explosion was due to some sliding that happened upon landing.
