Reinstating the draft?

Joe Stump thinks we're going to invade Iran (which is something I consider plausible, though not necessarily likely), and he asserts that to do so the draft will be reinstated.

I guess Sean and AJ are too old to be drafted, which is good. But Ben's only turning 24 this month.

I wonder if any of them would jump to sign up for the military if they thought they were needed. I wonder what the situation would have to be for them to feel that they were needed.

The whole idea of a draft makes me uncomfortable. If we really need soldiers, I'd like to think that the men in my life would step up. Of course, I don't want them to go at all.

I hope Stump's wrong. Really, I just hope we can resolve the situation with Iran (and others) diplomatically, and concentrate on the terrorists.

The problem as I see it is in dealing with Iran which is the worlds largest supporter of terrorism is that to separate the 2 would be a mistake...as GW said....terrorists and those that support and harbour terrorists MUST be dealt with in order to beat this 20 th century scourge..Allow Iran to build nukes and kiss this Earth goodbye

True, but the issue of multiple fronts needs serious consideration. If we spread ourselves too thin the terrorists could win out of sheer attrition.

I think it's funny that's it's only the liberals out there touting for a draft. :>

The Democrats went so far as to try to reinstitue it not too long ago, with the selling point that Bush would require it (trying, basically, to make it look like Bush wanted the draft). It was quickly put down. And not a Republican voted for it. ;P

Anyway, liberals have kept saying time and again that we're going to need a draft for this or that, and the Republicans say we don't. Bush says we don't. And we don't get one. So, I'm going to be a fool and simply believe that while Bush is in office, we aren't going to have the draft.

It's easy to scare voters with the mention of it, because that's something people just getting out of high school (and their worrying parents) aren't going to forget. In fact, they may not even remember that Bush said there would be no draft - or perhaps they'll fear he'll change his mind.

If you say draft, you get fear. It's a powerful measure of manipulation. But Joe Stump doesn't scare me.

Do you think it's likely that we'll go to war with Iran?

I think that's what they're trying to avoid right now. Some people have trouble recalling that a lot of back and forth with Iraq went on for years before this war. While it didn't work with Iraq, it may well work with Iran. If we finish off the job there, then maybe Iran'll get a clue that they really don't want to piss us off.

As it stands right now, I don't think anyone could make a good judgement, because everything's still getting started. Me, I thought North Korea posed a larger threat at the moment.

I will say that I really can't see us getting into it with Iran during Bush's second term. Maybe it could happen, but I just don't see that.
