Reading

I read The Last Unicorn for the first time. I started it yesterday and finished it today.

It was really good.

I particularly enjoyed getting to know more about Schmendrick, and seeing him come into his magic. I was also glad to see Molly Grue perceived as beautiful. I had always thought she was. It was nice that someone in the book also thought so.

I'm glad some of the proceeds from my DVD went to Beagle.

Next up: Snow Crash. Also for the first time!

I've not read The Last Unicorn nor seen the movie, though I have read about Peter S. Beagle's struggles and am glad the web has given him back some of what the studios stole from him.

As for Snow Crash, awesome book. Neal Stephenson is a great writer. George Clooney is working on a movie adaptation of another of Stephenson's books, The Diamond Age, which was good, but frankly I wish it were of Snow Crash.

Then again, movie versions of books often disappoint anyway...

I do recommend reading The Last Unicorn. The book isn't perfect--there are some issues of perspective--but the style and the story are fabulous. I also recommend the movie, which is fabulous except for when the characters sing.

My husband's response to that was, "Damn Disney for making it so every animated film had to be a musical."

The movie also features some songs by America, which I actually like a lot.

I've heard they were/are trying to make a live action version of the story, which would be neat to see.

I'm really looking forward to Snow Crash. It's one of those books that I've felt for a long time that I should have read by now. Glad I'm finally getting around to it!

As far as movie versions of books...yes. Book versions of movies are also terrible. I think if you're shifting media, you're going to have to change the story. Most of the time people try for a direct translation, which simply does not work.

Just compare the book and movie version of Howl's Moving Castle. If I had to compare them straight up, I'd actually say the movie is better, even though it came later. But really, they are very different. They accomplish different things. I think they're both great...and that's the kind of experience I'd prefer to have when a story is translated into another medium.

I love Snow Crash!

Just thought I'd share that bit of info. x_x Sorry I've disappeared for so long... it's been really crazy around here, and hasn't really lightened up yet, but I'll try to drop by here more often. Take care! *hugs*

I'm really enjoying it so far! Sam currently goes by the name "Hiro Protagonist" on the AMRN.

And it's great to see you! :)
