I remembered suddenly as I woke up [Harry Potter spoilers in comments]

He had to do it, didn't he? He'd made an Unbreakable Vow.

Dumbledore must have sensed it.

They'll never trust him again...

Well, I do think Dumbledore's injury was causing him/them serious problems. Hai thinks Dumbledore knew he was going to die the whole time; I'm not sure I agree with that. I think that Dumbledore would happily sacrifice himself to keep "the plan" working, and the reason he froze Harry was so that Harry wouldn't interfere. Killing Dumbledore means that Snape will definitely have Voldemort's trust.

I'm thinking that it will be very fitting if Harry is the one to figure out that Snape is still working for the good side. Somebody will have to, or Snape's information will be pretty useless to the Order.
